Here's the 2nd post for Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information's Open House!

It'll be about the concentrations offered and the career opportunities that entail upon graduation.

For me, I didn't have prior knowledge about the school at all. What concentrations it offered and stuff like that but went straight into applying for the school. Insane, but true story. Still haven't regretted one bit though.

But hey whoever's reading this, you're lucky coz this post will provide details on what the school has to offer for YOU!

If you don't exactly know what track you want to major in, don't fret, because like me, you can be an Inter-disciplinarian. You don't have to adhere strictly to any one concentration. You can take modules from different disciplines.

But if you do know which field exactly you're going for, then good for you coz here are the concentrations you can nose-dive into!

The most popular concentrations every year are Advertising and Public Relations. Dunno why.

First up, Advertising.
If creativity is your thing, and you want to change mindsets or persuade people through your ads, try Advertising.

I shall copy and paste the list of careers you can go into,

         Advertising
A concentration in Advertising will hone students’ practical ability in design & writing impactful, engaging copy built on consumer & public insights.

·       Account Director
·       Account Planner
·       Copywriters
·       Designer
·       Illustrator
·       Art Director
·       Media Planner
·       Media Buying Director
·       Interactive Media Strategist

The next is Broadcast & Cinema Studies.

My concentration, albeit interdisciplinary, is more skewed towards Broadcast because I've been doing modules like Broadcast Journalism which I am thoroughly interested in. If you want to learn to produce your own short films and videos, you might like to come to WKWSCI to pave your way towards the Broadcast industry. It is a tough one to be in, but as long as you have a passion for broadcast, then I say, Go for it.

This is just one of the awesome videos that my friends and I did for a class. To give you an idea.

It was one of the most exhausting assignments ever, but very worth the effort put in.

Broadcast & Cinema Studies

Fancy a career in radio, TV, or multimedia production?
This concentration instils you with the know-how and technical expertise you will need in your future career. Coursework provides you with a sound understanding of the content of production, information technology, and film studies. You will have a good feel of everything that exists within the electronic and broadcast media, such as scriptwriting and network systems.

Communication Policy & Research.
One of the lesser known concentrations here in WKWSCI. One of my most hated introductory module to this track because I had to do drafts after drafts of research essays and it was freakin labourious. But at the same time, I have friends who LOVE Comm research and EXCEL in it coz it's what they like to do. So if you like writing essays, this is for you. Quite interesting while researching.

Communication Policy and Research
Students learn about how we use communication, how it affects us, what shapes media content, and communication policy and economics.
You might study how students’ use of social media like Facebook affects their grades and social lives, or why we enjoy scary movies that make us scream, or what censorship is acceptable to Singaporeans. Students learn how to conduct research that meets professional standards, including surveys, experiments, interviews, and textual analysis. Students with such training work as communication researchers, policy makers, media consultants, or go on to graduate study and academic careers.

Public relations.
Well, I need no explaining for this. One of the more popular concentrations. In high demand in every sector because every company requires PR. Will never run out of job opportunities, if security is what you're looking for. If you have a flair for marketing and connecting with people, this could be your time to shine!

·      Public Relations
A concentration in Public Relations will teach students the intricacies of managing the various stakeholders in an organization & crafting effective messages for an organization.

A vast array of career opportunities awaits you, such as being a:
·       Public Affairs Manager
·       Corporate Communications Manager
·       Media Consultant
·       Publicist
·       Practitioner in Various Governmental Roles
·       Community Relations Manager
·       Employee Relations Manager
·       Fundraising Specialist

Lastly, a communications school can never be one without the Journalism track.

Initially when I was sec 3, I thought journalism was for me. But somehow it evolved into something else. I need not explain much for Journalism coz it's a natural calling for anybody who wants to be a journalist. As long as you have the passion for it. Our school upholds a strong reputation in Journalism.

Yes, WAY BETTER THAN NUS' FASS.

If you're thinking about NUS FASS or NTU WKWSCI. Please. Choose Wkwsci. "Communications" is our forte. We specialise in it. One of the best Comms school in Asia. I dare say the best, if I may.

Strict teachers but hey, the school toughens you up before you enter the real world out there. The students eventually love their teachers. Never attended the modules for journ before except the introductory one but yeah, if your passion lies in Journalism, please, answer that call.

Journalism
Get a real feel of the tight deadlines and adrenaline rushes journalists experience.
This is the specialization for those who want to work as reporters. The Journalism division focuses on print journalism, photojournalism, online information services, and media management. You will learn about writing stories that go into print media, such as magazines and newspapers. You will be trained in various reporting techniques and analyses, and also get an insight into the workings of media enterprises.

And you can minor in Information and New Media.
I know nuts about this one, but here's the info I got.

Minor in Information and New Media
The Information Studies Minor adds value to the communications degree because it prepares students on the movement of content to the digital world.  The 21st century is characterized by globalisation of society and industry, the maturing of the knowledge society, and the rapid development and adoption of new media. New media technologies and applications are bringing transformational changes to society, industry and individual lives. This minor examines new media technologies and applications from the perspective of information and knowledge management- how information and knowledge are stored, transferred, processed, managed, presented and consumed with new media. The programme also examines the potential applications and impact of new media, particularly internet technologies, social media and mobile technologies, with focus on Information, Technology and Users. This programme will equip graduates with an understanding of issues and principles underlying new media technologies and applications, and how to continually adapt and exploit emerging new media in their work and personal lives.

That's it! I'm super tired to be honest. So that's all for this post.

Questions? Just comment in the comment box for this post and I'll get right down to replying : ) Even faster, the tagboard. Be brave haha.

hi! i recently submitted my applications for NTU's WKWSCI and NUS's business school as my first choice, and i just got accepted into NUS business, but i'm still waiting for my application results from NTU. I was originally set on WKW for a long time after As, as i have quite a strong interest in journalism but little to no interest in anything econs-y or maths-y, but i'm still conflicted bc altho i love most things art like writing/ photojournalism etc, i feel like the career prospects in Singapore for such a field is quite limited, and i don't really want to write for ST/ go into Channel News Asia etc, and i'm having second thoughts due to the crazy deadlines/long hours/low wages journalists face. Is the journalism scene in Singapore really q restricted, and are those cases i've heard from WKW where people get to work for The Huffington Post really just rare cases, or should i just stick to doing something i hate (business), but might have more stable/abundant jobs w higher pay? I'm rly rly conflicted any help is much much appreciated!!!!

Hey Anonymous,

So sorry I don't get notifications for comments left in my blog!
Anyway, cut to the chase - I say go to WKWSCI. You might say I'm bias, but this is what I think -
1) You've a passion for journalism. And you hate business. To me, that says it all already.
2) You don't want to work the long hours/ want to work for elite companies - I just wanna tell ya - we all start somewhere. And yes, it's a occupation that runs on passion but it's utterly fulfilling. Although media can be restricted, but it's still worth the effort putting out stories that matter to Singaporeans. Eventually, your stories do make an impact to the world and who knows yeah, Huffington Post could be where you'll end up.
3) Both are general degrees. Communications and Business are both very general degrees and in my opinion, both need not require a bachelor's degree to make it out there. Experience is necessary. At the end of the day, I think it's your time at Uni that counts and WKW really offers a bloody good wholesome curriculum - biz is quite cut throat. Uni is a time for you to get to know yourself better - not much about the theoretical knowledge you attain. So I say WKW.

That's my two cents' worth. Still, go for WKW. You've dreamt of it - perhaps you're just second guessing yourself at the moment
